CHARGE Syndrome (CS) is a complex genetic condition with a pattern of birth defects, often involving life-threatening conditions like congenital heart defects. Babies with CS typically face extended hospital stays and multiple surgeries. They experience issues with swallowing, breathing, hearing, vision, and balance, leading to developmental and communication delays. Statistically, one in every four children diagnosed with CS passes away before the age of 3. However, with proper comprehensive medical care, children with CS can beat the odds by exceeding physical, educational, and social expectations.

The Rady Children’s Hospital Center for CHARGE Syndrome is essential for children diagnosed with this condition. CS causes a wide range of interconnected medical and developmental challenges, requiring care from numerous specialists. The Center consolidates this multidisciplinary care into one location, easing the burden on parents to navigate complex medical information and treatments.
The Center focuses on the betterment of children diagnosed with this complex genetic condition. CHARGE Syndrome causes a multitude of medical and developmental issues that are linked with each other, thereby requiring services from a long list of specialists. This Center brings the multi-disciplinary care of CS children under one roof, alleviating the heavy load on parents to navigate their child’s care and interpret complicated medical information.
Opened in 2023, the Center has already streamlined care for children with CHARGE Syndrome, offering tailored treatment plans based on input from a multitude of specialists. Opened in 2023, the Center has already streamlined care for children with CHARGE Syndrome, offering tailored treatment plans based on input from a multitude of specialists. The Center for CHARGE Syndrome is currently serving over 50 local Southern California families, 10 non-local families from all over the United States, and one international family. And this is expanding weekly!
Not only is this Center making a difference for patients with CHARGE Syndrome, but it is also acting as a blueprint for Rady Children’s Hospital to effectively provide treatment to children with other genetic syndromes and complex medical conditions. This new type of precision medicine is the future of patient care, and we could not be more excited to be trailblazers in this area.
The hospital does not yet provide funding for the CHARGE Center; therefore, its operation is dependent on philanthropic funds and donations. The net proceeds from this event will fund programs, such as the following:
